Virginia voters have the chance to vote in two more elections in 2026. One is a Primary Election on August 4, 2026, and the other is a General Election on November 3, 2026. The Primary Election is later than usual this year; it is typically held in June.

What is a general election? What is a primary election?
In a general election, you vote for who will become your elected official. General elections take place in November.
A primary election happens before a general election and is held when there are too many candidates for a general election. For example, only one person from each political party can run for President. But lots of people want to be President, so each party votes on who their candidate will be. Who can I vote for in the upcoming Primary Election?
On August 4, 2026, Virginians can vote in a primary election to decide on candidates for the following federal offices:
- Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate
- Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, 1st District
- Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, 2nd District
- Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, 5th District
- Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, 7th District
- Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, 8th District
- Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, 9th District
- Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, 10th District

Some cities and counties are also holding a primary election on August 4, 2026 to decide on candidates for local offices, such as the county sheriff or a member of city council. To find out who is running in your locality, check local news sources, such as newspapers and radio stations. The League of Women Voters Education Fund offers a Ballot Lookup Tool that may have information on local elections in your area. You can check the Candidate Lists provided by the Virginia Department of Elections.
