How to Register

You can register online if you have a DMV identification number. If you’d rather use a paper form, you can fill out a voter registration application and then mail it or deliver it in person. You can also register to vote when applying for (or receiving) services or assistance from many state agencies.

What’s Next

Look for a letter or card with your voter information to come in the mail. If you do not receive it within 30 days, you should check your registration status online or contact your local voter registration office for assistance.

Tips for using a paper voter registration application

  • Download a form and print it, or pick one up from a public library or a state/local government office location.
  • Complete all information blocks on the application. If any information requested does not apply to you, write the word “NONE” or “NA” in that space. Exception: section 4 contains a list of conditions. You can leave section 4 blank if none of the conditions applies to you. 
  • Sign and date the application.
  • Mail or deliver your completed application to your local voter registration office. Or, you can mail it to the Virginia Department of Elections, 1100 Bank Street, Richmond, VA 23219.

FAQs

I think I’m already registered to vote. How can I check?

You can use the Virginia Department of Elections’ citizen portal to see your registration status and update your voter information. You can also contact your local voter registration office for assistance.

What if I have moved since the last time I voted?

If you have moved from another state, you must register to vote in Virginia (see above). If you have moved within the state, you will need to update your voter record. You can update your voter record online, by using a Voter Registration Application form, or by contacting your local voter registration office.

Do I need an ID to vote?

You can provide either an acceptable form of ID or sign an ID Confirmation Statement at the polls. Review the list of acceptable forms of ID, which includes a voter card/confirmation document. If you don’t have an ID, you will be asked to sign a statement that you are the registered voter that you claim to be.

I’m a college student. Can I vote at my school?

College students have a choice of where to vote, either where they attend school or at their “permanent” address. You should register where you want to vote and vote where you are registered. Learn more about how college students can register to vote in Virginia. 

If I am 17 but will turn 18 by the November General Election, can I register to vote?

Yes. You will be eligible to vote in any election held that year.

I missed the registration deadline. Can I still vote?

If you miss the registration deadline, you can register (or update your name and address) when you vote at your polling place on Election Day or at your early voting location. You will be offered a provisional ballot. Learn more about registering to vote and voting on the same day.

I have been convicted of a felony. Can I vote?

You can vote only if you have had your rights restored. Once your rights have been restored, you must register to vote before you can qualify to receive a ballot at the next election. Learn more about applying to have your rights restored after being released from incarceration.
