Your right to vote in local, state, and federal elections
If you experience voting challenges, you need to know what to expect, as well as what to ask for.
The rights of disabled voters are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other federal and state laws. These laws address barriers that can arise when registering to vote, accessing a polling place, and casting a ballot. These laws prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities, including those under guardianship, those who reside in nursing homes, and many others.
Voting rights laws can and do change
During the 2024 Virginia General Assembly session, REV UP Virginia and other advocacy groups helped lead a successful effort to expand accommodations for curbside voting. Now, a voter with any disability can vote on Election Day without leaving their vehicle. Previously, curbside voting was limited to voters with physical disabilities. Voters 65 or older may also use curbside voting.
